Sal Gilbertie. supplies parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme and every other herb under the sun, more than 400 varieties, to nurseries and greenhouses throughout the northeastern United States.
But to Gilbertie, herbs are more than the heart of a successful business, Gilbertie, on the forefront of the herb movement for over 40 years, is renowned as one of the country’s leading experts in herbs. He continues his mission to spread the good news about herbs throughout America.
“A spring of lavender can scent a room. Herbs can, and should, grace everyone’s life,” says Gilbertie. “herbs are so easy to grow and give so much in return–beauty, flavor, fragrance – fascinating and endless uses.
Gilbertie’s commitment and dedication to herbs has inspired him to write seven books, the recently released Small ;Plot, High Yield Gardening, Kitchen Herbs; Herb Palate Cookbook; Growing Herbs in Containers and his newest issued Jan 17, 2012, by Ten Speed Press, herb Gardening From the Ground Up.
He is a frequent lecturer on herb gardening and hosts year-round workshops held at the Westport, Connecticut retail shop. Gilbertie has appeared on numerous national radio and television programs, including “Martha Stewart Living,” Home Matters on the discovery Channel the “Home Show” on the Lifetime Channel and “Sara’s Secrets” on the Food Network.
In March 2006, people Places Plants Magazine named Gilbertie to their list of the 50 Most Influential Horticulturists in the Northeast. Gilbertie is also featured in “The Gardener’s Life” by Laurence Sheehan (Clarkson Potter-2005.) In 2011, NOFA named him Connecticut Organic Farmer of the year.
“The authors of the Bible, the ancient Romans, the Indian Shamans, and Shakespeare (who never stopped praising herbs) all knew what we are now appreciating and rediscovering, herbs make one’s life fuller,” he says.
Sal Gilbertie resides in Easton, Connecticut with his wife Marie who is also in the business. They have four children and 11 grandchildren.
