Epic Tomatoes From Your Garden - stories, varieties, and tips for success
Craig LeHoullier, award winning (Garden Writers Association Gold award winner 2016) author of the best seller Epic Tomatoes (Storey Publishing, 2015) and Growing Vegetables in Straw Bales (Storey, 2016) lives and gardens in Raleigh, North Carolina. Craig caught the gardening bug from his grandfather and father during his childhood in nearby Pawtucket, Rhode Island. A scientist by education (PhD in chemistry, Dartmouth College) with a 25 year career in Pharmaceuticals, Craig developed his passion in heirloom tomatoes “on the side”, joining the Seed Savers Exchange in 1986 and serving as their tomato expert for decades. Aside from growing thousands of tomato varieties (none more special than Cherokee Purple, which he named in 1990), his most recent project is using a unique collaborative approach to create new varieties of dwarf growing tomatoes perfect for container gardeners. He speaks all over the country at gardening events, botanic gardens and arboretums on subjects ranging from tomatoes to container and straw bale gardening to tomato breeding. He was a featured guest on the NPR radio show The Splendid Table, and a recent episode of the Growing a Greener World TV show focused on his work.
